Workplace Fire Safety & Egress Planning Kit Fire Prevention Week, October 4 to 10, 2026

# Your Plan Is on File. Your Building Has Changed.

Walls moved, storage accumulated, staff turned over, and the plan keeps describing a layout that no longer quite exists. Fire Prevention Week™ fills October with smoke alarm reminders and kitchen safety tips, and most of it isn’t written for the building you manage. This free kit covers the workplace side, walking your exits, extinguishers, drills, and emergency action plan section by section.

Sneak Peek

## What’s Inside the Kit

Five fillable sections. Print them, complete them, and keep them on file. Fire Prevention Week™ is mostly aimed at homes. Your building needs its own plan.

Section 1

### The Building

#### Annual Egress Plan Audit Checklist.

Exit routes, signage, emergency lighting, door hardware, and assembly point designation. Walk the path people will actually take, not the path the old floor plan still shows.

#### Fire Extinguisher Inspection Log.

Monthly and annual documentation for OSHA 1910.157. Mounted is not the same as inspected, and the log is what you have when someone asks for the record.

#### Fire Drill Documentation Template.

Drill date, who participated, what you found, and what you fixed. A drill that happens without a record is hard to prove later.

Section 2

### The Program

#### Fire Safety Training Status Checklist.

By employee group, is training assigned and current? This is usually the column that takes longest, because it involves people rather than hardware.

#### OSHA 1910.38 EAP Compliance Checklist.

Written plan current, employee training current, evacuation procedures documented. The checklist for the plan behind the rest of the kit.

#### Print it and keep it on file.

Each section is fillable. Work through it once a year. Fire Prevention Week™ is a good annual anchor, since the week comes around whether or not your plan has been updated.

Five fillable sections. Print it, complete it, keep it on file.

### Why safety managers are downloading this one

**It covers the workplace, not the kitchen.** Fire Prevention Week™ is mostly aimed at homes. This kit is for the building you manage: exits, extinguishers, drills, and the written emergency action plan.

**It starts from the plan you already have.** The problem is rarely a missing binder. It’s a plan that still describes a layout the building no longer quite matches.

**Each section is fillable.** Print it, complete it, and keep it on file as documentation. You can hand the same kit to facility, EHS, HR, and building operations.

**It separates hardware from people.** Checklists find the gaps. The training column is usually the one that takes longest, because it involves people rather than equipment.

**It is built to repeat.** Work through it once a year. Fire Prevention Week™ is a useful anchor, whether or not the plan was updated the last time the week came around.

Five gaps show up repeatedly: egress routes that no longer match the floor plan, obstructed or locked exits, extinguishers mounted but never trained on, assembly points that outgrew their space, and drills that happen without documentation. This kit walks each one so you can see where you stand before an inspector does.

### Workplace Fire Safety: 5 Critical Gaps in Most Egress Plans

Fire planning degrades quietly. Layouts change, storage accumulates, staff turns over, and the plan on file keeps describing a building that no longer quite exists. Five gaps show up repeatedly: egress routes that no longer match the floor plan, obstructed or locked exits, extinguishers mounted but never trained on, assembly points that outgrew their space, and drills that happen without documentation. This article walks each one and tells you how to check it and who owns it.

FAQ

## Frequently Asked Questions

When is Fire Prevention Week 2026?

Fire Prevention Week™ 2026 runs October 4 to 10. It is organized by the National Fire Protection Association and is mostly aimed at home fire safety, including smoke alarms and kitchen fires. This kit covers the workplace side: exits, extinguishers, drills, training, and the written emergency action plan.

Who is the Workplace Fire Safety & Egress Planning Kit for?

Facility managers, HR leaders, EHS and safety directors, and building operations managers. It is for the people responsible for what happens when the alarm goes off, and for proving that exit routes are clear, extinguishers were inspected, and people know where to go.

What is inside the kit?

Five fillable sections: an Annual Egress Plan Audit Checklist, a Fire Extinguisher Inspection Log, a Fire Drill Documentation Template, a Fire Safety Training Status Checklist, and an OSHA 1910.38 Emergency Action Plan Compliance Checklist. Print it, complete it, and keep it on file as documentation.

Does completing this kit mean our workplace is compliant?

No. This resource is for general information. It does not constitute legal advice or a determination of compliance. Requirements vary by industry, jurisdiction, and occupancy type. Consult the current text of the applicable OSHA standards, your local fire code, and your authority having jurisdiction.

How often should we work through the kit?

Once a year. Fire Prevention Week™ is a good annual anchor, since the week comes around whether or not the plan has been updated. Use it to check the building you have now, not the building the plan was written for.

## Checklists Find the Gaps. Training Closes Them.
